Fire Alarm System Design (NFPA 72)

Pythian Design provides comprehensive fire alarm and signaling system design in accordance with NFPA 72. Our services include detection device placement, notification appliance layout, audibility and intelligibility calculations, mass notification integration, and complete submittal packages. We ensure your fire alarm system meets all code requirements while providing reliable occupant notification.

Fire Alarm System Components

Initiating Devices: Smoke detectors (photoelectric, ionization, or dual-sensor), heat detectors, manual pull stations, duct detectors, and waterflow switches.

Notification Appliances: Horns, strobes, horn/strobe combinations, and speakers for voice evacuation.

Control Panel: Addressable or conventional fire alarm control panel sized for the facility.

Integration: Interface with other building systems including sprinklers, HVAC, elevator recall, and door holders.

Monitoring: Central station monitoring or connection to municipal fire department.

Audibility and Intelligibility Requirements

Audibility: NFPA 72 requires notification appliances to produce sound levels at least 15 dB above average ambient sound level, or 5 dB above maximum sound level (whichever is greater).

Public Mode vs. Private Mode: Different requirements based on whether occupants are awake or sleeping.

Intelligibility: Where voice notification is required, NFPA 72 mandates Common Intelligibility Scale (CIS) measurements to ensure announcements are understandable.

Device Spacing: Proper spacing accounts for room geometry, acoustics, and background noise to achieve required sound levels.

Standards & Compliance

NFPA 72: National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code - the comprehensive standard for fire alarm systems.
NFPA 101: Life Safety Code - occupancy requirements for fire alarm systems.
IBC/IFC: Building and fire code requirements for alarm systems.
ADA: Accessible notification requirements including visual strobes.
Local Amendments: Many jurisdictions modify NFPA 72 requirements.
