Fire Alarm System Components
Initiating Devices: Smoke detectors (photoelectric, ionization, or dual-sensor), heat detectors, manual pull stations, duct detectors, and waterflow switches.
Notification Appliances: Horns, strobes, horn/strobe combinations, and speakers for voice evacuation.
Control Panel: Addressable or conventional fire alarm control panel sized for the facility.
Integration: Interface with other building systems including sprinklers, HVAC, elevator recall, and door holders.
Monitoring: Central station monitoring or connection to municipal fire department.
Audibility and Intelligibility Requirements
Audibility: NFPA 72 requires notification appliances to produce sound levels at least 15 dB above average ambient sound level, or 5 dB above maximum sound level (whichever is greater).
Public Mode vs. Private Mode: Different requirements based on whether occupants are awake or sleeping.
Intelligibility: Where voice notification is required, NFPA 72 mandates Common Intelligibility Scale (CIS) measurements to ensure announcements are understandable.
Device Spacing: Proper spacing accounts for room geometry, acoustics, and background noise to achieve required sound levels.
